The friendship recession

Our most connected generation is also our loneliest.

We have 1,200 followers and no one to call when our flight gets cancelled. Linger is built for that gap โ€” the one between online connection and real human company.

2ร—
Loneliness has doubled since 2003
Adults today spend twice as many hours alone as they did two decades ago โ€” and 70% less time with friends.
59%
of adults say making friends gets harder after 30
School and workplace bonds wear thin. The default playbook for adult friendship is "happens to me," and it stops happening.
$406B
global annual cost of social isolation
Loneliness is now a public health crisis on par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Healthcare systems are paying the bill.
Why now
Technology promised to connect us. Mostly, it just isolated us behind a glow. Linger is built for the part of being human that needs to actually be in the room.
โ€” Linger founding principle
How it works

Three steps. No swiping. No matches.

Linger is the friction-light version of finding a friend nearby. You tell us what you're into. We surface people who share your vibe within a short walk. You suggest a hangout. That's it.

Step 01

Tell us your vibe

Pick from 16 interests โ€” coffee shops, hiking, board games, live music. We use these to find people on the same wavelength.

โ˜• Coffee shops ๐Ÿฅพ Hiking ๐ŸŽฒ Board games ๐ŸŽธ Live music ๐ŸŽจ Art ๐Ÿณ Cooking
Step 02

Discover nearby

See who's around โ€” distance shown in walk-times, not GPS pins. Shared interests are highlighted. Verified Lingerers get a โœ“.

Step 03

Suggest a hangout

Skip the small-talk loop. We suggest the activity, the place, and the time based on your shared vibes and walk-time. Tap accept and you've got a plan.

FAQ

Things people ask.

Is Linger a dating app?

No. Linger is explicitly for platonic friendship. The product, the matching, the community guidelines, and the reporting categories are all tuned for friend-making. Treating Linger as dating is a reportable offense.

How is this different from Bumble BFF or Meetup?

Bumble BFF makes you swipe โ€” friendship by Tinder mechanics. Meetup is event-based โ€” you go to a room of strangers and hope. Linger is in-between: you find a specific nearby person who shares your interests, then suggest a specific hangout. It's a structured shortcut to "what would naturally happen if you ran into each other twice."

What's the founding-member rate?

$24/year for Linger+, locked in for as long as you stay subscribed. After we open generally, Linger+ will be $39/year. Founding members also get a ๐Ÿฅ‡ badge on their profile and early access to events in their city.

Where are you launching first?

We're starting in the DC metro area โ€” and you decide where. It's a race: the neighborhood with the most people on the waitlist is where Linger opens first. So get your corner of DC โ€” or Arlington, Alexandria, Bethesda, Silver Spring โ€” on the list and rally your friends. More cities follow from there.

What does Linger+ get me?

Unlimited "say-hi's" (free users get 5/day), the ability to see who's said hi to you, travel mode (connect in cities before you arrive), members-only weekly events, and an ad-free experience with no sponsored venue suggestions.

How do you make money?

Three streams: Linger+ subscriptions (~70% of revenue), sponsored venue partnerships with local cafรฉs and parks (~25% โ€” clearly labeled, paying us when a real hangout happens there), and curated paid events (~5%). We don't sell user data, don't run ads, and don't offer profile-boost packs.

Is my data safe?

Your phone number is used only for sign-in. Your location is stored at city level, never shared at GPS resolution. We don't sell data to advertisers or brokers. You can export or delete everything in one tap from Settings.

For investors

Building the infrastructure for adult friendship.

Linger is raising a $3M seed to launch its first three cities. Below: the top questions investors have asked. The full deck is one tap away.

How will the $3M be used?
  • 45% ยท $1.35M Engineering & product โ€” iOS, Android, backend, discovery, payments, venue attribution, admin tooling
  • 22% ยท $650K Trust & safety โ€” T&S lead, moderators, verification, hotline/vendor, AI-assisted moderation pipeline
  • 18% ยท $550K City launch & marketing โ€” density events, venue partnerships, host network, local PR, referrals
  • 15% ยท $450K Legal, compliance, insurance, admin โ€” formation, privacy, contracts, cyber/liability, accounting, payroll

18-month runway. Co-led round; targeting $1.5โ€“2M from lead. Open to strategic from social, health & welfare, or community-focused funds.

What's the business model?

Three streams, each aligned with the user instead of conflicting with the value prop:

  • Linger+ subscription ($4.99/mo or $39/yr) โ€” ~70% of revenue. Unlimited say-hi's, who-likes-you, travel mode, no sponsored venues.
  • Sponsored venue partnerships ($0.40/click ยท $4/booked visit) โ€” ~25%. Local cafรฉs, parks, bookshops pay only when a real hangout lands.
  • Curated paid events ($8โ€“25 tickets, 10% take) โ€” ~5% revenue but the best onboarding tool we have. 3ร— retention lift on attendees.

Projected LTV $84, targeted CAC $14, ~14-month payback — illustrative, pre-launch model figures.

How big is the market?

$14B TAM (global friendship & social discovery). $4.2B SAM (North American 25-44 urban). $180M SOM (top 30 US cities, 1% household penetration in 3 years). Market sizing is illustrative and forward-looking.

For context: Match Group did $5.4B in 2024 โ€” declining for the first time. Friendship is the next category to be unbundled from dating, and nobody has won it yet.

Why now?

Three tipping points landed at once:

  • The 2023 U.S. Surgeon General loneliness advisory put a federal frame on the problem โ€” schools, employers, and insurers are funding interventions.
  • Swipe-app fatigue is measurable. Gen Z reports the lowest dating-app satisfaction on record. The category is open.
  • Remote work scattered the office โ€” the default adult friend-making engine is gone for 35% of professionals.
Where are you in the journey?

We're pre-launch and building in the open. Our focus is reaching real launch density — roughly 500 active members — in our first DC-area neighborhood. Which one? You decide: the neighborhood with the most people on the list goes first.

The waitlist and founding-member pre-orders above are how we're proving demand neighborhood by neighborhood. We'll publish real traction here as it's earned, not before.

What's your AI angle?

AI shows up where it makes the product safer and quieter, not where it does the talking for users. We're explicitly not building AI icebreakers, AI-written bios, or an AI “friend.” That would break the real-people, real-plans promise.

Where it earns its place:

  • Trust & safety — AI-assisted report triage to hit the 1-hour SLA, scam/catfish detection during verification, behavior-pattern flags for dating-app misuse, photo authenticity checks. The investor story: AI-leveraged T&S lets us run a 1-hour SLA at a fraction of Match Group's cost per moderated user. That's a real line item against the $650K T&S budget and a defensible unit-economics moat.
  • Hangout suggestion engine — when two people connect, the activity/place/time gets proposed from shared interests + walk-time, removing DM ping-pong. Invisible to the user; it just feels like good suggestions.
  • Onboarding & matching — suggested interests from initial signals, a tighter graph over the 16-vibe taxonomy, smarter “people nearby who share your vibe” surfacing.
  • Accessibility — real-time translation, voice-to-text in chat, alt-text for profile photos. Pure goodwill, no brand tension.
How do you keep users safe?

Safety is built in, not bolted on:

  • Optional ID verification (selfie + government ID) with a โœ“ badge on verified profiles
  • City-level location only โ€” distance shown in walk-time buckets, never GPS
  • 24/7 trust & safety team with a 1-hour SLA on urgent reports
  • In-app Safety Center with tips, live-location sharing, and a hotline
  • Real-name policy, community guidelines, and one-tap block & report
What's the moat?

Local network density. Friendship is hyperlocal โ€” once a neighborhood hits critical mass, it's very hard for a new entrant to displace it. We launch city-by-city to build defensible density before scaling. Each city becomes its own moat.

Secondary moat: the "Linger Mayor" host network. Vetted local hosts run weekly events. They become brand ambassadors with reputational skin in the game.

How is this different from Bumble BFF, Meetup, or Friended?
  • Bumble BFF makes you swipe on friendship โ€” weird because friendship isn't a binary attraction decision. Bolted on to a dating product.
  • Meetup is event-based. You walk into a room of 30 strangers and hope. No 1:1 introductions.
  • Friended is online-only โ€” it defeats the point of building friendship.
  • Linger sits between: 1:1, but structured around a specific in-person hangout.
